Botox was originally investigated (late 70’s) by Alan Scott, MD, an ophthalmologist who tried to straighten kids eyes, but it failed for that. It was picked up by oculoplastics doctors in the mid-80’s to treat blepharospasm (I was involved in the original investigation during my fellowship, 1985) where it was a God-send helping patients we used to do horrible surgery to fix. The cosmetic use of Botox was created by another ophthalmologist, Jean Carruthers, MD in Canada and her husband, a dermatologist. Their secretary noticed the blepharospasm patients didn’t have wrinkles between their brows and asked them to use it on her…the result was the first paper on cosmetic use…botox is now the #1 cosmetic procedure in the world. Also fillers (hyaluronic acids) were used for decades for ocular surgery before anyone thought to use it in the skin for cosmetic reasons. Finally, I have taught a botox and fillers course at the annual Academy of Ophthalmology meeting since it started more than a decade ago.
